Cardiff City Hall

Inscapes laid turf at one of the most important landmarks in Cardiff at the beginning of 2005, in time for the city to celebrate being the “Capital of Wales” for the previous 50 years!  Our team re-turfed the lawns in front of the City Hall, after the “Winter Wonderland” closed in January, 2005.

Over the Christmas period, the ice skating rink had been the centrepiece of the “Winter Wonderland” and proved very popular with the skating enthusiasts who had braved the elements.  Once the ice rink, fairground and other attractions had been removed, the magical atmosphere was gone leaving just an area which needed to be re-instated to its former glory - and we won the contract for this job.

Vertidraining was undertaken on the approximately 5700 square metre area, then on Monday 31st January, 120 ton of rootzone was delivered to the site and levelled.  Preparation continued on site during the next day and then on Wednesday, 2nd February Super Wide rolls of cultivated turf started to be delivered and turfing began.  The turf installation was speeded up by using the revolutionary Super Wide  rolls; this concept means a faster installation time.  One of these rolls holds approximately 40 square metres and weighs between 900 - 1000 kgs and a roll can be laid in about 4 minutes.  It takes approximately 28 rolls of this size to turf 1000 square metres.

The speed at which the area was turfed was phenomenal!  The last roll was laid on the lawn in front of City Hall on the morning of Saturday, 5th February.  This re-turf was done in record time and the credit for this must go to the Super Wide roll system, experienced staff, along with favourable weather conditions.  Outside the sporting venues of the country, this was the first time that this procedure had been used, but it was definitely not the last!

We think about environmental impact in everything we do. Is the process needed? Is it sustainable? The good news is that this approach always delivers better landscape solutions anyway.
