Green relief at Glanrhyd Hospital

Glanrhyd Hospital situated in Penyfai, on the outskirts of Bridgend provides a range of inpatient mental health facilities. As part of a major redevelopment and extension of the hospital we have been working there since mid-September to create both internal and external gardens. The work has involved importing nearly 600t of topsoil including 100t being imported to planting beds inside the building. The remainder of the soil has been to the outside of the hospital.
We are now in the process of turfing and planting the external surrounds and will be laying around 1600m2 of turf, planting 30 trees and approximately 5000 shrubs. The plan then is to dress all areas with Melcourt bark mulch to give an improved appearance and to suppress weed growth as we go on to maintain the areas for the next 12 months.
The link between improved well-being and contact with plants and green spaces is now well established so we very much hope that our contribution will make a world of difference to both patients and staff at Glanrhyd.
