Hats off to the Celtic Manor….

Posted on: September 30, 2010 by normanmaitland posted in News

As play in the 2010 Ryder Cup is about to start this seems like a good time to say hats off to the vision, determination and skill of everyone at the Celtic Manor in bringing such a prestigious event to Wales – and in ensuring a fantastic course is looking at its very best. Over the years we’ve done our share of work on every part of the course (most recently in supplying almost 900 cubic metres of bark to create temporary walkways for the expected crowds) but the real achievement is that of the permanent staff who have worked tirelessly to make the event a success. Our very own Tony Horne is at the Celtic manor for the duration of the Ryder Cup, one of an army of the world’s best greenkeepers who are there to help the event go smoothly.

… and a more modest cheer for Inscapes Electrical

Inscapes Electrical portable charger

We’ve designed an ingenious mobile solution to keep the ambulances on duty at the Celtic Manor Ryder Cup in peak condition: portable charging equipment which will keep the ambulances’ auxiliary batteries fully charged while the vehicles are on standby during the event at which around 50000 visitors a day are expected.
“The ambulances need to be charged at 110 volts so the portable chargers are fitted with transformers in case the only power available is a 240 volt domestic supply. They can also plug straight into a 110 volts supply if that is available,” says Arran Mordecai, our Contracts Manager. “In any event, the device is fitted with an auto-eject function so that the moment the ignition of the ambulance is turned on the plug connecting the ambulance to the charger is ejected and the ambulance can drive off without having to manually disconnect.”

Parc Derwen gets underway

Parc Derwen is one of the most significant housing developments in Europe: covering 85 hectares to the north east of Bridgend the area is planned as a sustainable community of 1500 homes with associated facilities such as a small shopping centre and a primary and nursery school. Our teams were there last week creating some of the soft landscaping needed before the site could be opened to the public.

This fascinating development is a joint venture between the Welsh Assembly Government and a consortium made up of Persimmon Homes and other house builders. It’s one we hope to be involved in further and so we look forward to bringing you further updates.

isn’t it amazing what you can get done in a day?

Just when we thought that our work at Cowbridge School was coming to an end we were commissioned to create the natural turf sports pitch – and we had a day to do it in!
The hardest part of the task was getting the turf from the school gate to the pitch area – a distance of several hundred yards - since all wagons had to stop at the school gate. The pictures above were taken in stages throughout the day – morning, noon and night – from which you can we fulfilled our objective!

We’d be exaggerating if we said we’d built these paths to the multi-use games areas on the same day - but build them we did. You can see the finished artificial pitch in the background complete with goals. It’s all a credit to our various teams - and a wonderful resource for all kinds of teams at the school and in the community for the future.

Two beauties

We should have known that the moment we wrote in the previous news posting about Hampton Court Palace that we seldom get to revisit projects the chance to revisit two more projects would come along in in a trice - a bit like waiting for a bus!

The first picture shows the pitch at Bradford City FC last week after we’d worked our magic on it. The playing surface is superb  after our summer renovation work installing improved drainage, sand-slitting, Korrowing, scarifying and over seeding.

Bradfor City FC

The second picture is Rochdale FC where, within a tight window of 6 days after their last match, we Korrowed off the pitch, spread fibre reinforced rootzone  concentrate which was ameliorated with the existing surface, re-graded the levels and then drilled.

Needless to say, both clubs are delighted with the end results!

Hampton Court Palace revisited

It isn’t often that we get the chance to re-visit projects once we have completed our work – unless more work is needed! We were especially glad to be able to go back to Hampton Court Palace last week where, earlier in the year, we had undertaken extensive restoration of lawns and historic walkways in the approaches to what is one of the UK’s most important historic sites and top visitor attractions. As you can see the lawns and walkways are being kept in tip-top condition. You can read more about how we created them in this pdf file:
