Moving mountains? All in a week-end’s work for Inscapes

Well it wasn’t exactly a mountain but it certainly was a challenge. The Wentworth Course in Surrey is undergoing major reconstruction works which entails  the greens being demolished and replaced completely. On Thursday 11th June we were contacted by Celtic Manor’s Director of Golf Jim Mckenzie to see if we could send a team to remove the turf from his practice green at the 2010 Ryder Cup course, and then collect turf from Wentworth Golf Course in Surrey that he wished to replace it with. When did the work need doing? Right then of course! Thereafter the schedule went like this (shown in the pictures 1 to 5)

Friday 12th June: we removed the surface from the practice green with our Korro.
Saturday 13th June: a team of 5 staff with two lorries and assorted equipment lift the turf off the Wentworth greens and stack them onto pallets to deliver them to Celtic Manor.
Sunday 15th June: we sent a lorry to collect the final load so it was all on site for Celtic manor’s own staff today, Monday 15th June – less than 96 hours after the original ‘phone call.  And that’s what we mean when we talk about customer service!

We’re celebrating a string of contract successes

We are celebrating a string of successes with new contracts worth up to £500k following a £100k investment in new specialist sports contracting equipment. Contracts on sports pitches at the University of Wales, at Cardiff City and at Morlais Castle Golf Club are all described and pictured below and have added to our success in the year so far which was already defying the gloomy mood.

“As well as these very substantial contracts in the world of sport, we’re once again undertaking new and highly specialised environmental work in the Brecon Beacons and enjoying considerable success with general landscaping,” says our Chief Executive, Gareth Rees.

The contracts for the University of Wales are at the Cyncoed campus and involve improving drainage, korrowing-off and re-seeding two rugby pitches. At Cardiff City INSCAPES are responsible for moving pitch material from the Bluebird’s old Ninian Park ground to a new training facility adjacent to the new Cardiff City Stadium and for undertaking general landscaping there. At Morlais Castle Golf Club large scale turfing around a pond has been undertaken together with the re-seeding of 25k square metres of fairway and practice areas. At Margam Discovery Centre owned by Neath and Port Talbot Borough Council, extensive seeding of both turfgrass and wild flower mixes has been carried out.

The investment in raking and trenching equipment, top dressing machinery and a stone hopper means that INSCAPES can handle more and larger projects at the same time as well as work more efficiently on site. “We pride ourselves not only on the quality of the work we undertake but our ability to deliver completed projects on time and on budget, says Gareth Rees.

Marvellous Morlais

There has been a golf course at Morlais Castle for over 100 years.  With spectacular views across the Brecon Beacons National Park, the course is one of two halves. The first nine holes are built around the old quarry while the back nine are set on rolling moorland.
The course has changed constantly over the years. Our recent project there included large scale turfing around a pond and the preparation and seeding of over 25,000 square metres of fairway and practice area.
As you can see, the setting is beautiful and, it has to be said, it was one of those projects that our site crew was sorry to finish!

Margam Discovery Centre

Set in 850 acres of beautiful parkland where 600 deer roam freely, Margam Discovery Centre offers high quality environmental education to all age groups, both residentially and for day visits. The centre itself is a state of the art low carbon footprint building designed by The Weld School of Architects. The Centre is run in partnership with Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council. The Centre has a diverse range of habitats within the park grounds – something we played a part in enriching  by removing over 100 tons of stone from an area prior to seeding it with a mix of grass and wild flowers.  The work was painstaking and demanding – but the end results will be well worth the effort in what is a truly amazing educational resource.

The end of an era for the Bluebirds

INSCAPES are involved in the big move from the Bluebird’s old Ninian Park to the new Cardiff City Stadium. We are responsible for moving pitch material from the old ground to a new training facility adjacent to the new stadium, for inserting some slit drainage there, and for undertaking general landscaping at the new stadium.all-change-for-the-bluebirds.JPG

Emotions are mixed: a sadness that an era has come to an end in a stadium that has been part of life in wales for so long, and great pride at being involved in the birth of what will undoubtedly become a new legend

Perfect pitch for the University of Wales

We’re busy at the University of Wales Cyncoed campus on work to improve drainage by inserting sand slits at 1.5 metre centres, korrowing-off and re-seeding two rugby pitches.

We’re finding our expertise in this area in ever greater demand and, since improving the drainage on an existing pitch is far less costly than replacing the pitch entirely, wonder whether this trend will continue as budgets for recreation and sports get squeezed.
