HOCHTIEF is one of the world’s leading construction companies employing over 35,000 people in 60 countries. Its Hochtief Griffith Joint Venture won the contract to construct the new Coity bypass, and, since the new road is almost literally on our doorstep, we were delighted to be awarded the landscaping contract to undertake the associated planting and seeding.
The need to keep it green
“The construction of the bypass not only relieves pressure on the village of Coity itself but marks the start of the creation of a 21st Century green village with 1500 homes, a school and a shopping centre,” says Gareth Rees, Inscapes Chief Executive who, incidentally, grew up on a farm now crossed by thebypass. “Whilst the plan is that the new village will be as environmentally sustainable as possible, a first priority was to protect the old village from the noise of the new road. A well planted bund and roadside verges are designed to absorb noise as well as adding to the overall visual amenity.
Job all but done: on time and on budget
The majority of the planting was completed in January despite some of the worst winter weather for years. In addition to the planting of transplants and specimen trees we undertook the seeding of the verges. “Some of these verges were really quite steep so we took it upon ourselves to hydroseed these to ensure rapid establishment of the grass and thus minimize the risk of soil erosion or seed being washed away in the appalling weather.”
Only the area around the site cabins now needs to be landscaped and this will be done as soon as they are removed. This was our very first contract with Hochtief, a business widely admired for its commitment to construction excellence as well as its environmental credentials. We’ve gone on to work with them on some infrastructure work on the Heads of the Valleys projects so, as a business which is committed to the idea of profitable partnership, we hope this means the start of a beautiful friendship
